What is up? Your Electric bill
Well, after talking to a few folks around the area, it seems like electric bills have taken a HUGE spike higher recently. One obvious reason would be the extremely cold temperatures we had around here in January. I know in our house, the heat stayed on constantly just to keep it semi-warm. Since we primarily use natural gas, however, it didn’t have an effect on our electric bill as much.
Also, I’ve noticed that several of the complaints about higher electric bills have been coming from the folks who are on Licking Valley RECC. I have talked to a few folks who have Kentucky Power, however, and they have seen a pretty drastic increase this winter, as well.
Could another possible reason for the price hikes be to help offset the costs that came with all of the cleanup and repairs involved in the ice storm early last year? At least some portion of the increase is because of the recent approval by the Kentucky Public Service Commission to allow Kentucky’s Rural Electric Cooperatives to increase rates by up to 15%. Kentucky Power has also made a request for as much as a 35% increase, but I’m not sure that it has been approved yet.
What I am curious about is a true comparison of THIS year’s bills versus LAST year’s bills. Would anybody be able and willing to dig back through their bills from last winter so we can do some comparisons? If so, please leave a comment on this thread and tell us about what you find. Specifically, if you could find what your RATE was last year, as compared to this year, it might help determine if the increases are due to the electric companies or to Mother Nature.
I’ll post more on the topic as we move along, but if anyone has some numbers to throw this way, I’d LOVE to see ‘em…

Well, depending on which forecast you look at, we’re either in for more cold rain tonight, an inch or 2 of snow, or possibly 4 or more…I’m not even sure which I’d prefer at this point. I love a good snow, but since we don’t seem to GET very many GOOD snows any more, I’d just as soon it go on ahead and get warm now.
However, if it DOES snow you in this weekend, you shouldn’t have a shortage of good sporting events to check out, a couple of which will involve the Bayou Country.
First off, the Kentucky Wildcats will battle the Tigers of LSU, who have not exactly been playing like Tigers of late. More like tabby cats…neutered tabby cats. Besides the fact that they have an annoying color scheme, they also have a player in Tasmin Mitchell who I am pretty sure played with Shaquille O’Neal when he was there. LSU has lost 8 in a row, and UK should cruise pretty easily, but…it is a game, on the road, in the SEC….so…anything can happen. It WON’T…but it could.
I listen to my gut and my gut tells me Kentucky 87 – LSU 64, but my heart says this could be close, and gut’s a damn moron. So they get to carryin’ on and then my brain chimes in saying I got to try my hand at the fast paced world of sports wagering…
Sorry…got off on a tangent there. Let’s just say Kentucky wins, and move on to the next most relevant game this weekend…the Super Bowl.
The Saints of New Orleans will battle it out with the Colts of Indianapolis. Since Pittsburgh isn’t involved, my interest level isn’t really that high for the game. However, I like to use the Super Bowl as an excuse to eat snack foods for 4 hours…not that I NEED an excuse to do that.
I guess in this one, I’ll be rooting for the underdog Saints. Partly because I think it would be a feel-good story for New Orleans, and partly because I don’t partake in the Manning Lovefest that the National Media does. It isn’t that I hate Peyton/Eli…but I’m just not a big fan. So…put all that together, and I guess that makes me a Saints fan this weekend.
So, make sure you’ve got your bread and milk…and chips and guacamole…and wings and beer…and crawfish pie and filet gumbo…and cozy up on the couch this weekend for some pretty good sports action. Son-of-a-gun, we’re gonna have big fun. (sorry…but I had to do that)
- 0 Comments Saw this on KSR and wanted to share it here. It came up again because in a recent interview, Coach Cheney said his only regret about the incident was that he didn’t wait until the game was over and take Calipari out back and “beat his ass”.
- 0 Comments Another game, another dominating performance by Demarcus Cousins.
At the start of the season, I figured he’d be here at least 2 years. Now, I think we should just enjoy what he gives us this year, because I’d say it will be one and done for the big fella.
- 0 Comments About time to show the Vandy Nerds what SEC basketball is all about. I expect UK to come out SUPER focused and hand the Commodores their first SEC loss and get the Cats back on track.
The Cats will be mighty, mighty, and lettin’ it all hang out, and this win will be easy…like Sunday morning.
Sorry.
Go BLUE!!!
- 0 Comments In referencing the Republicans tonight, Obama said, if “leadership is going to insist that sixty votes in the Senate are required to do any business at all in this town, then the responsibility to govern is now yours as well. Just saying no to everything may be good short-term politics, but it’s not leadership.”

Well, it is hard to imagine Obama has been in office for a year now. Seems like only yesterday when he was speaking to us and talking about the change he was going to bring to Washington.
So…a year later, what has changed?
Unemployment…still at record highs.
Oil prices…on the move UP after a dip earlier this year.
Health care…stalled as we wait for the new Republican Senator to be sworn in for Massachusetts.
The Environment…still there.
The Troops…still there, too.
Honestly, I still have faith that Obama can make good things happen for us. What I’m afraid of, however, is that he may have underestimated how hard it is to actually bring change and progress to Washington, DC…a city that is about as receptive to both of those as the NRA is to Michael Moore.
Big Health has Big Pockets. Big Oil has HUGE pockets. And legislators have Big Hands (the better to make all of our problems seem smaller)…and they are always out reaching for more money. So it takes more than one person to bring about change. it takes a LOT of cooperation, something the Democrats have not shown a lot of here lately. (they also seem to be running a bit short on the “listening to the people” thing too, turns out)
But, before any folks on the right jump up and say “HA!” or “We told you so!” about Obama, let me remind you that it was 8 years of your sterling leadership that put us in this mess. Hell, I’m starting to think it may have been on purpose.
The Super-Secret Association of the Republican Master Plan made sure Bush got elected (and reelected), knowing he would completely screw the country into a hole so deep sunlight cannot penetrate it and oxygen does not exist. Then, with the country in an uproar, the people would be ready for a change…someone with much promise and new energy. BUT…the plan for 2008 was not to WIN the election, no, no…it was to make sure they LOST the election. Why the hell else would McCain pick Sarah Palin as his running mate?
Nope…they wanted the Democrats to win, because they knew they’d be inheriting such a mess it would take divine intervention from Zeus himself to set things back on track. Then, as the mess continues to worsen, and the country continues to lose faith in their new Bringer of Hope, the Republicans are in a perfect position to swoop in and REALLY take things over. Republicans ride the wave of discord and pick up new senate seats…house seats…governor’s offices…
And unlike their Democrat counterparts, the Republicans will not break ranks once they take the country by the throat again. No, they will squeeze what remaining life there is out of the middle class…they will overturn Supreme Court decisions…they will have no regard for the environment or the people who live in it…they will wage wars where none need to be waged…a right-wing wet-dream.
Of course, that may not come to pass…the world is set to end in December 2012, so…we’ve got that to look forward to.
Plus, that’s really giving the Republicans too much credit…isn’t it??
I don’t know that I’ll be watching Obama tonight…not because I don’t still believe in him…or because I threw my remote through the TV screen last night after the Cats lost.
No, I still have faith, but as they say…actions speak louder than words, and right now, I need to see some action.
- 0 Comments Well, as you may or may not know, my wife and I have been in the process of buying a house for most of this Summer, so I haven’t had a lot of extra time or mental focus for a while. We finally were able to close around the end of August and it has been pretty much non-stop work since then. We got our internet hooked up just last week, but I only got my computer unboxed and hooked up this past weekend…it has been a long process, to say the least!
Anyway, I’ll have more regular updates coming now that things are settling down a LITTLE bit. Plus, now I’m a townie, so maybe I’ll be able to keep an eye on things a bit better, too.
To tide you over, I thought I’d share this clip this morning. With the health care debate taking up most of the news right now, it seems only fitting to share this PSA about the forgotten victims in all of this…the insurance companies.
Enjoy.
- 0 Comments I’m just curious as to how some of you folks feel about this issue, so I thought I’d put it out there.
With food prices soaring and some sort of food recall or contamination story hitting the news regularly, the time has never been better to start growing your own food. I have noticed more little garden plots in the ground this year, or at least it seems to me like there are more around, and I think that is great. Nothing beats a good ol’ homegrown tomater, right?
Also, I think more people are getting interested in raising their own livestock, and it seems that one of the easiest ways to venture in to that area is to start by raising your own chickens for both meat and eggs.
What I am curious about are the folks who live inside the city limits of West Liberty. Currently, I THINK there are ordinances against having livestock within the city limits, but I know in several cities, exceptions have been made for poultry, typically excluding roosters or noisy fowl, and no slaughtering on the premises.
In West Liberty, I’m not sure how strictly it would be enforced if someone WERE to have a few chickens in their back yard. I’m sure it might depend on the neighbors and the area, but it would seem to me that it should be OK for someone to have 4 or so chickens pecking around in their yard, if they wish. I am just curious if anyone inside city limits currently DOES have some chickens (I promise, I won’t tell!!)…and I wondered what YOUR thoughts were on having livestock in town.
(By the way, if you are interested in starting to raise a few chickens of your own, you might check out the poultryOne web site or the Community Chickens site)
- One Comment So, Paintsville has gone “wet”…I guess this tight economy has everyone looking for more revenue sources.
Also, looks like they had a little peeping Tom problem in Lexington…now, the guy was obviously a pervert, but with a name like his, did he really have a chance???
- 0 Comments A brief rundown of a few things that are buzzing on the web today…most of this is not newsworthy in ANY sense of the word.
A sexist Subaru ad from the 70’s (you’ve come a LONG way, baby!)
Cameron’s house is for sale, from Ferris Bueller. Wonder if it includes the car??
Can I get one of these at Wal-Mart?? Or maybe Maloney’s?
