Chris Thile & Michael Daves – Sleep with One Eye Open
Anybody else here have to leave the Bluegrass to really start appreciating bluegrass? Well, it helped finding that the music of the mountains is alive and well in the fingers of an alt.rock-weaned twenty-something virtuoso like Chris Thile (pronounced ‘Theee-lee’).
Chris will never live down his time with Nickel Creek, which is fine since it launched him into genre-defying collaborations with Toad the Wet Sprocket’s Glen Phillips, his rock/bluegrass hybrid Punch Brothers, double bass legend Edgar Meyer and many a Bela Fleck recording.
For his latest trick, he’s teamed with jazz islander Michael Daves for a full set of bluegrass standards (read:old songs) called Sleep with One Eye Open, now available from Nonesuch Records. The album addresses the giants: Big Mon, Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs and P. Domain.
