The Road Home
Every day, I think to myself…”I need to be writing more…I need to be taking more pictures.” And pretty much every day, I neglect to do either of those things.
I started journaling a little bit, which often made use of both activities, but I sort of drifted away from it. In an effort to get back in the groove, along with a pressing need that I constantly feel to be adding more content to this site, I’m going to try doing some/most/all?? of my journaling HERE.
Now, it won’t necessarily be anything too deep or provocative. To be honest, I’m not sure WHAT all it will include at the moment. My initial thought is that I plan to try and take a picture every day of something that strikes me in some way, and then either write about that picture or whatever is on my mind when I sit down to create the post…maybe both.
I also want to weave in any thoughts or observations that have been on my mind that particular day…whether they are about local issues, national issues, or just some random stuff that is on my mind at the time…and hopefully that will start to generate some conversation on here. I realize, though, that the conversation can’t really get started unless I start talking a little more on here, so that is the plan.
To kick it off, I thought I’d start with one of the many pictures I tend to take/attempt to take while I’m driving to or from work. It is fairly common that I see something on my commute that causes me to pull out my phone and snap a picture. Now, I don’t frame these up or try to get all fancy about it. In an effort to keep all of my attention on my driving, and to keep the photos feeling sort of “loose”, I will generally just point my phone in a direction and start clicking. Sometimes it works out…sometimes, not so much…but I always keep my eyes straight ahead and my focus on being safe.
I’ve noticed that there’s several spots along the way that tend to get photographed more than any others. For some reason, there seems to always be a cooperative cloud…or a color palette that I find striking…in those spots. This first picture is one such spot. You probably recognize it as the last hill before you come in to town on 519, on the new road cut. Maybe it is all of the rocks against the blue sky and the grey road…I’m not really sure…but I have a good amount of photos taken from roughly this same area, and I’m sure there will be more.
Sometimes, I’m listening to music. Other times I’m listening to one of my favorite podcasts. Still other times, I just have the windows down, and I am listening to and sorting through all of the racket inside my head. I am surprised by how many times I am struck by the urge to take a new picture along a road that I travel at least twice a day. It would seem like nothing new would ever present itself inside this cycle of routine, but that just isn’t the case. There’s something new almost every day.
So with that being said, let’s begin this journey…who knows where it will lead!
