A Couple of Monday Evening Notes and Thoughts…

Just a few things on my mind on this cool, Monday, April evening…

For Black Crowes fans, they have just announced that they are releasing a 2-record set (on CD and vinyl) this fall with all-acoustic versions of songs they’ve made over the past 20 years.  Called simply Croweology, it will be priced as a single album price to honor all the fans.  The new album release will be followed by a huge tour starting this fall, where they’ll play for 3 hours at most venues.  A 1.5 hour acoustic set will open the shows, followed by 1.5 hours of …

Weekend Plans?

Do you know how hard it is to find a graphic that says "have a good weekend"??

Well, after what has seemed like the longest week ever, the weekend is finally here.  I find it funny that often times, I can spend all week thinking about things I need or want to get done but can’t because I have to be at work…then the weekend arrives, and I can’t seem to think of any of them. 🙂

So what do we have lined up for this weekend?

For one thing, it needs to rain.  It is WAY too dry…and along …

Budget Agreement Unlikely

Can't we all just get along?

Since I didn’t watch American Idol last night, let’s recap another show that’s about run to run its course…the bickering over Kentucky’s budget.  Apparently, Senate leader David Williams went on the radio this morning in Lexington and said it was unlikely that the House and Senate will be able to reach an agreement on a budget before the midnight deadline tomorrow night.

Let’s recap, shall we?

First, the Governor sent up a budget that made some cuts, spent some money, and relied on expanded gambling to generate some much needed revenue.  The House basically …

Jon Stewart is Great

Stewart takes Fox News to task for basically just ignoring the facts about the recently signed nuclear arms reduction pact.

Some people (badly misinformed people) seem to think that this pact will leave us defenseless, or that the US won’t attack a country that attacks us with biological weapons…but they are just plain wrong.  The pact only seeks to reduce our nuclear weapons arsenal by a third.  ONE THIRD.  We’d still have around 1,500 weapons…which I’d imagine would be enough for just about any situation that arises.

But I’ll shut up and let Jon Stewart take it from here…

AI Recap: Tough One to Call

Tim Urban's Yearbook Photo

OK, I won’t get too long-winded with the recap today.  I’ve almost started to bore myself with these updates. Or maybe I’m just bored with the show.  It definitely has sort of bottomed out for me, and I honestly just can’t see it going on for too much longer.  But, complain as I do, I’m still watching, so let’s DO this!

I think overall, it was a pretty good night for everybody.  I didn’t really hate any of the performances, but I wasn’t completely blown away by anyone, either.

To me, the standouts were Crystal and …

Horrible Mine Disaster in West Virginia

I know that most of you have already seen the coverage, but I just wanted to take a minute to send thoughts and prayers and condolences towards the families of the miners in West Virginia.  It is the worst mining disaster in the US in 26 years, and as it stands right now, there are 25 confirmed dead and 4 still missing.

The explosion took place during a shift change, and was likely due to a buildup of methane.  From reports that are coming out, it sounds like there was a long history of violations with this company at this …

Watch Duke tonight…OR…

Wonder if he(?) will be watching??

So I’ve been giving some thought to what sorts of things I’d rather do than watch Duke win this game tonight against Butler.  I’m all for Butler winning, but I just don’t see the magic continuing on for them.  Duke just has too many pieces…but…stranger things have happened (like West Virginia beating Kentucky)…so…who knows.

So…here’s my list of things I’d rather do than watch Duke play for/win the National Title game tonight….

– Eat dirt.

– Throw a rock at a hornet’s nest.

– Catch a bee with my mouth.

– Catch a bullet …

What month is it again?

I like to fish...but...

So after having one of the coldest winters that I can remember, and seeing snow on the ground for probably the better part of a month, April arrives and the thermostat has been fully switched in to the HOT position!

Taking a look at our weather page, you can see that the Kentucky Mesonet is showing a reading of 87 right now in Morgan County.  It is actually reading 90 in Owsley County right now.  Just incredible.

So, with all of this heat and sunshine, what do you all have lined up for this weekend?   Let’s …

Making sense of it all…a UK wrap-up

Me, Saturday night.

Sorry to be so late in updating the site about this weekend’s NCAA games, but stuff just kept getting in the way…including my disgust over how things turned out for UK in the tournament.

First off, I want to say that I’m happy at how the season turned out overall.  The Cats went 35-3, won the regular season SEC title and the SEC tournament title.  They were entertaining from start to finish, and the personality of the team was hard not to like.

Just think…at this time last year, UK had just let go of Billy Clyde …
