Debris, or not debris? THAT is the question…

debris
I have been attending as many meetings as time (and my job) will allow, and it has been fascinating to be a part of the process.  I typically do a lot more listening than talking when I'm there, and one of the things that has become pretty obvious is that there are a lot of conflicting stories and tons of rumors floating around right now about a great many things.

One item in particular has been in relation to the cleanup of debris.

Help Georganna Feed Folks!

HERE’S THE STORY:
Georganna is feeding mass clean up crews and residents every day other than Sunday.  She and her crew are cooking 200-400 meals on weekdays and 800+ on Saturdays. There is a lot of rebuilding to do, and they have ongoing supply needs and food needs. We will be working on a canned food drive for them in May, but need immediate relief help NOW! Lots to do there.

As a follow-up to the story, Cafe Relief, as it is now known, has been on the move.  They have been located on Prestonsburg …

every day since the tornado, i just never know what it is that will set me off.  something may make me completely angry, or i may just tear up for whatever reason.

on saturday, i had to take my vehicle to the insurance company in morehead to have the damage assessed.  when i finished, i called home to check in, and beck said that after i left, a swarm of volunteers came down the street and piled in to our yard, and within no time, they had cleared the biggest part of the debris from our immediate yard.  i …

Coming to a town near you...

I just wanted to take a little break from the tornado coverage to share some information about at least one new phone headed to Appalachian Wireless soon, and an approaching announcement about another.

Yesterday, this was posted on the Appalachian Wireless Facebook page:

Appalachian Wireless Our first 4G phone will be available in May. It will be the HTC Fireball. It’s very similar to the Droid Incredible. Also, we will have more news to pass along next week regarding other phones. We cannot release the details of that at this time, but soon.

red tape.

redtape

since the tornado hit Morgan County, there have been countless amazing stories that have emerged about just how truly good people can be to one another in a time of need.  and to be fair, I’ve heard far more GOOD tales so far than I have bad ones.

i wanted to share this one, just because it kind of stinks.

first off, let me say that I absolutely know there is a need for regulation and procedure in a time like this.  it is tempting to want to start rolling the ball forward as fast as you can, but unfortunately, …

ATTENTION STORM VICTIMS

Before you begin the process of rebuilding, all property owners must first call City Hall at (606)743-3330 and request a copy of requirements and procedures per the City of West Liberty Planning and Zoning Commission.

The City of West Liberty Planning and Zoning Commission will meet every Monday at 10:00am at the Bank of the Mountains Index Branch until further notice. All meetings are …

Forever changed.

Redcross

As everyone is well aware of by now, our community was hit extremely hard by tornadoes and storms on Friday, March 3. The level of destruction is almost more than most people can comprehend, myself included.  We were fortunate to only sustain limited damage, but so many others, including my mom and sister and many close friends, were not as fortunate.

Relief efforts are well underway, and the outpouring of support to the area has been nothing short of amazing.  However, one of the areas that has been lacking so far is the spread of information, or the spread of …

Rebuilding: Trees

truffula trees

As folks start to recover and rebuild, one of the things so many people will be faced with will be how they work trees back in to their landscape.

I will be collecting info as I can find it and sharing it here, particularly concerning saving trees that you still have, and choosing varieties that might be more tolerant to wind.

Tom Eblen: How does a town rebuild after a tornado? Recovering cities offer advice
