Strong Winds Possible Wednesday

Just a heads-up to folks that there could be some pretty severe winds in the area on Wednesday as a cold front moves through.  Right now, gusts up to 50mph are being suggested as possible.

The only reason I bring it up is that with lots of trees and branches already just barely hanging on for dear life, power lines could be in for another test.

I’ve seen several trees around the area still laying over on lines (most of them appear to be phone lines), and I’m sure there are branches hanging in trees just waiting to fall.  Not …

I’m back!

Well, I’m back in civilization today.  We have been without electric at our house since late in the day Tuesday, so I have been at home in the dark.  I ventured back to work today, in order to pick up a generator from a friend.  I wouldn’t have worried about it really (I sorta like it with no electricity or tv or anything, turns out!)…but our deep freezers were going to need some juice shortly or we would have lost all of our food we had frozen.

Shortly after I got to work today, my wife called and let me …

American Idol just doesn’t “get” us…

OK…I hate to even admit I watch American Idol, but…I do.  My wife and I still love the show…still pick our favorites to go all the way…still get angry when good singers get sent home and bad ones move on.  It is a  sickness…we know that.

Anyway, this year, they held auditions in Louisville, and the show aired last night (January 21).  For the most part, they didn’t make Kentuckians look TOO bad, but we didn’t exactly come across as well adjusted, either.

However, one of the hopefuls came in and sang “White Lightnin’”, by George Jones, and at the …

Time to update the grid?

This article on CNN.com talks about how our electricity needs will be changing in the future and what we must do to keep pace, especially if we want to shift our focus to renewable energy sources.

Currently, our electric grid is VERY out-of-date, and to carry the electricity from sources such as wind or solar farms, some changes will have to be made, and they won’t come cheap, at least not in the short-term.

So what do you think…is it worth the price tag for a future that is FAR less dependent on non-renewable resources?

Cardinology: Ryan Adams and the Cardinals

I’m a pretty big fan of this man and his band, the Cardinals.

For a long time, Ryan Adams (not BRYAN Adams) developed quite a reputation not only for his music, which has always been well received critically, but also for his behavior on stage during shows.  Many of those problems have been attributed to drinking and whatever, but those days seem to be gone now.

I was able to catch Ryan Adams and the Cardinals in Louisville in 2007, and then later that year in Columbus, and both shows, while extremely different in style, were incredible.  After seeing them …

In my opinion…

…Billy Gillispie is the man for the job at UK…but if things don’t rapidly improve here, but they keep getting better in Arkansas, the “we want John Pelphrey as UK coach” crowd is going to be a LOT more vocal.

…2008 went by too fast

…the economy sucks, and much of the blame can be placed on oil.  Oil got us in to the war…oil took more and more money out of our checks…and oil in turn helped destroy consumer confidence and all but destroy the American automotive industry….

BUT…

this economic mess COULD be a chance for us to …
