The HumpDay Review – 9-26-2007

Well, it is that time of the week again.  Time to break down the past week and look forward to the week ahead.  Keep in mind that parts of this features are always meant to be a little light-hearted.  I don’t think we should ever take ourselves too seriously, and so I hope you’ll keep that in mind as you read not only this feature, but many of the stories on our site.

So, with that in mind…let’s see what we’ve got.

It was HOT…again…with no rain in sight.  This has been a very hot and dry summer, and I know that a lot of farmers in our area have been hit hard, or are expecting to be hit hard this winter when hay prices could skyrocket (not that they already haven’t) and cattle prices could drop drastically.  Farming is definitely one of the hardest jobs in the world and really doesn’t get the attention it deserves.

The Sorghum Festival preparations kept rolling right along, and we are now only a couple of days away!  Doc Holbrook has the mill running hard and cane is being cut daily…can you tell I’m excited??

A tip of the hat to Earl, at the LVC.  Whether you agree or disagree with what you read in the paper, I think we should count ourselves lucky that we have a paper like the Courier in our town and someone like Mr. Earl Kinner running it.  I don’t pretend to be a news person with this web site…it is more of a community blog, really…but I do hope that we can offer up a different platform for folks and maybe come at things from a different perspective.

As for the REAL news, I’ll leave that to the professionals. 🙂

The Cougars had a hard time of it with P-burg.  That was gonna be a tough game, but those games will build character.  The Cougars face Fairview this Friday night in the Sorghum Bowl, and that could be a very tough game, as well.  Good luck to the coaches and the team on the game!

The UK Wildcats rallied (again) in the 4th quarter (again!) for a win (again!!!).  The Wildcats beat a tough Arkansas team, on the road, and now stands at 4-0 going into this weekend’s match-up with Florida Atlantic.  This one has all the makings of a "trap" game, where UK is looking ahead to a Thursday night trip to South Carolina, but I feel like Coach Rich Brooks will keep the team focused and they’ll take care of business.  From the things I’ve read, this team is not looking at this season as "mission accomplished".  They still feel like they aren’t getting the respect they deserve, and they come out each week with a chip on their shoulder.  Look for UK to pull away in this one…I’m going with 52-17.

Bill O’Reilly made an arse of himself (again) with is rant about how surprised he was when he visited a restaurant in Harlem, NY that is owned by African-Americans, and a large number of African-Americans make up their customer base.  He seemed stunned that, "There wasn’t one person in Sylvia’s who was screaming, ‘M-Fer, I want more iced tea.’"
